Being in the science stream, this is fairly normal, but i expect this to happen to asia countries. But even the westerners have their fair share of gunners.

It's called self handicapping. By saying what they said to u, if they answered wrongly it would be 'expected or understandable' but if they answered correctly, it gave them 'bonus mark' because even without preparation they could still answer the questions.
